Welcome to South Street WI, in Whitstable, Kent.

The Women’s Institute in the UK began in Anglesey in 1915 and the ideals of truth, justice, tolerance and friendship are as important today as they were then. The WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. The WI will celebrate its centenary in 2015 and currently has 212,526 members in around 6,600 WIs. It exists to enable women to expand their horizons and to learn and pass on important skills and have an effective role in the community.

As WI members, we all belong to the National Federation of Women’s Institutes and at a more local level, we are part of the East Kent Federation.

Our South Street Women’s Institute celebrated its Diamond Anniversary in January 2014 in true WI style with wonderful birthday cakes, made and decorated by two of our members. From an initial membership of just 34 ladies in 1954, we have grown in 60 years to a large friendly and active membership of around 110.

At 60 years of age, we thought it a good time to develop our own web site and truly move into the 21st century! We hope you’ll explore our website and then come along, if you’re not already a member, to see what the South Street WI has for you.
